 Indoor Air Quality Facts:

  • EPA ranks Indoor Air Pollution among the top 5 environmental risks.
  • Unhealthy air is found in up to 30% of new and renovated buildings.
  • World Health Organization reports that Indoor Air Pollution causes 14 times more deaths than Outdoor Air Pollution.

What's in your indoor air?

Whether it's through the building's air exchange system or simply by opening a window, pollutants will enter your home or business with the outdoor air. These pollutants add to those existing inside already, such as:

  • Dust
  • Chemicals off - gassed from furniture, carpet and paint
  • Particulates from burning candles
  • Chemicals from cleaning products and hair products
  • Fumes from gas appliances

Contaminants and particulates in indoor air - such as those produced from the above list - can trigger allergies and asthma. They can also directly affect energy levels and quality of sleep.

Here is what Interior Health and Safety has to say about Indoor Air Quality:

Indoor Air Quality:

An underestimated source of illness in our communities is right inside our homes and workplaces:" Poor Indoor Air Quality." Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is like air pollution inside, and it can result in low levels of personal energy, lowered work output, poor work efficiency, sickness and in extreme cases, death.

There are many sources of contaminants in the home environment, and with increasing energy costs, homes have been made more air tight, allowing these contaminants to build up.  A partial list of contaminants includes:

            >
dust                                        > dust mites

            > solvents                                  > formaldehyde

            > perfumes                                 > tobacco smoke

            > moulds                                    > bacteria and viruses

            > combustion products                  > outside air pollution

            > radon                                       > animal dander

We spend a good amount of time indoors, so these contaminants can become quite significant. Moulds are very common, and if you can see mould in your home, then you may have a problem. Some moulds are toxic on their own, but any mould in the home is a concern and should be dealt with promptly. You may need to bring in a professional to do a thorough cleaning job and search for any unseen mould.

Another serious IAQ problem is “environmental tobacco smoke” (ETS). It is a major cause of illness and even death. In BC, laws have been passed to prohibit smoking in a number of indoor public places. In homes and automobiles, however children are still subjected to unhealthy conditions from ETS, contributing to problems such as asthma, poor athletic and academic performance and more frequent colds. Interior Health has campaigned to improve air quality for children through their “Kids Need Breathing Space” program, encouraging adults to smoke outside, and refrain from smoking in the car.

Improving Indoor Air Quality is a tricky business. Sometimes the solutions are simple, and sometimes they are more complex. Fresh Air Spaces will help make it easy and find the right solutions for you.

Have You Had Your Indoor Air Tested Lately?

The EPA estimates that seven out of ten homes and businesses have Bio-Contaminants that could contribute to health problems for the inhabitants. Mould spores, pollen, pet dander, dust, fibers, and other Bio-Contaminants may be at very high levels in the air, yet undetectable to the human eye. If we can't see these Bio-Contaminants how can we know if the air we breathe is healthy or unhealthy.

Fresh Air Spaces will come out to your home or business and test for these Bio-Contaminants and then develop a full report that defines whether the air you are breathing has low, medium, or high levels of Bio-Contaminants that could be making the inhabitants sick.
" Air Sampling is one of the best testing methods used to determine if the air we breathe is healthy or unhealthy. "

An IAQ/Mould Inspection complements and does not replace a structural building inspection or consultation with your medical practitioner.

Where warranted, we will recommend remediation and offer suggestions about who you might use to do the work.In many cases, probably upwards to 80% or more of the homes/offices we are in, an IAQ/Mold Inspection is performed and remediation is unnecessary.Sanitization is less expensive, less invasive, and less destructive to the home/office.Once the certified inspector determines the extent of the IAQ/Mould problems, he may legitimately suggest this protocol and assist his client in expediting the solution that will significantly improve your Indoor Air Quality in a matter of days.

Our Philosophy:  Involves partnering with you, the home or business owner to show you ways you can improve the Air you breathe and the Water you drink. The easy-to-follow maintenance program, services, and products we suggest will dramatically improve your living and working environments and provide a healthier home and business.
