Indoor Air Quality Facts:
What's in your indoor air?
Whether it's through the building's air exchange system or simply by opening a window, pollutants will enter your home or business with the outdoor air. These pollutants add to those existing inside already, such as:
Contaminants and particulates in indoor air - such as those produced from the above list - can trigger allergies and asthma. They can also directly affect energy levels and quality of sleep.

Here is what Interior Health and Safety has to say about Indoor Air Quality:
Indoor Air Quality:
An underestimated source of illness in our communities is right inside our homes and workplaces:" Poor Indoor Air Quality." Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is like air pollution inside, and it can result in low levels of personal energy, lowered work output, poor work efficiency, sickness and in extreme cases, death.
There are many sources of contaminants in the home environment, and with increasing energy costs, homes have been made more air tight, allowing these contaminants to build up. A partial list of contaminants includes:
> dust > dust mites
> solvents > formaldehyde
> perfumes > tobacco smoke
> moulds > bacteria and viruses
> combustion products > outside air pollution
> radon > animal dander
We spend a good amount of time indoors, so these contaminants can become quite significant. Moulds are very common, and if you can see mould in your home, then you may have a problem. Some moulds are toxic on their own, but any mould in the home is a concern and should be dealt with promptly. You may need to bring in a professional to do a thorough cleaning job and search for any unseen mould.
Another serious IAQ problem is “environmental tobacco smoke” (ETS). It is a major cause of illness and even death. In BC, laws have been passed to prohibit smoking in a number of indoor public places. In homes and automobiles, however children are still subjected to unhealthy conditions from ETS, contributing to problems such as asthma, poor athletic and academic performance and more frequent colds. Interior Health has campaigned to improve air quality for children through their “Kids Need Breathing Space” program, encouraging adults to smoke outside, and refrain from smoking in the car.
Improving Indoor Air Quality is a tricky business. Sometimes the solutions are simple, and sometimes they are more complex. Fresh Air Spaces will help make it easy and find the right solutions for you.
